STAR Series

The STAR Series is Fliteway's Learn-to-Figure-Skate group program.  It bridges skaters over from CanSkate to Skate Canada's STARSkate Program (figure skating).

Fliteway's STAR Series has two levels:

1.  STAR Academy
2.  STAR Group

CSA-certified helmets and figure skates are mandatory.  Skates must be correct size and feet must be able to stand fully upright in them (no pronation/ supination).  A light jacket, gloves/ mittens, and clothes that permit easy movement are recommended.  Long hair must be tied back.

Skaters in this program are typically from Fliteway's CanSkate Program who received an invitation to join STAR Series.  Alternatively, skaters may request an assessment by the club for entry to this program.

Registration for STAR Series is in-person only. Please email the club to make an appointment or book a time using the link on our website's homepage.

1.  STAR Academy

STAR Academy is the first stepping stone to figure skating for skaters fresh from CanSkate.  It is a group class focused on developing skating fundamentals geared towards introduction of basic figure skating skills.  This program includes both on- and off-ice classes.

To make progress in this program, skaters are required to skate at least two days per week.  To improve at a faster rate, we strongly suggest:
  • 3 days per week (highly recommend)
  • 4 days per week (accelerated progress)

OFF-ICE CLASSES

Off-ice classes are complimentary group classes that support skills that skaters learn on the ice.  These classes are always either directly before or after on-ice practice.  Running shoes are required.

2.  STAR Group

STAR Group is the second stepping stone designed for skaters ready to handle individual practice time.  It continues to focus on fundamental figure skating skills necessary to transition into the STARSkate program.

STAR Group also includes both on- and off-ice classes.
In addition, skaters receive semi-private and small group lessons.

To progress well in this program, skaters are required to skate at least three days per week.  We do recommend four days per week (same cost as three days).

Long-term Athlete Development RECOMMENDATIONS
Skate a minimum of 3 to 4 days per week, for 10 months per year. Take some dance classes, e.g., ballet, jazz, hip hop, etc.
Attend off-ice classes regularly. Participate in other sports, e.g., gymnastics, swimming, team sports.
Develop routine (avoid missing classes). Follow at-home training guidelines to help support skating progress.
